Repurposing Uninitialized Disks

Prerequisites

  • A replacement hard drive

  • Verify that the hard drive is compatible with your server

Caution

Disks repurposed from other systems MUST be low-level formatted before hot-plugging. See Hot Swapping and Plugging Disks | Preparing Repurposed Drives for Use in Swarm for more information.

Removing a Drive

This is applicable in the case of a retired or faulty drive.

  1. Locate the drive on the server.

    1. Navigate to the chassis details page and enable the LED disk light.

    2. Click on the disk light toggle in the disk's display row to flash the light for the specific disk.

  2. In rare cases (like dead/broken disk), you need to enable the identification light on all drives. The drive that does not flash is the one that is broken.

  3. Press the release button to open the hard drive carrier handle.

  4. Gently pull the hard drive carrier out until it is free from the slot.

Installing the Replacement Drive

  1. Insert the replacement hard drive into the hard drive carrier.

  2. Slide the hard drive carrier into the empty slot until it connects with the backplane.

  3. Close the hard drive carrier handle to lock the drive in place.

Post-Installation

  • The server should automatically detect the replacement drive.

  • Monitor the server to validate the replacement drive is functioning correctly.
