Differences between FileFly normal and aggressive scrub

Differences between FileFly normal and aggressive scrub

When configuring a FileFly scrub policy to reclaim Swarm storage space, you can choose between using a normal scrub and an aggressive scrub by enabling/disabling the Aggressive Scrub checkbox.

As of FileFly version 3.1 all scrub operations are by default aggressive so there is no checkbox to enable.

The difference is in how much they remove:

  • Normal scrub removes from Swarm:

    • files/stubs that have been deleted from the primary storage.

    • old versions of files, keeping in Swarm only the current version of the file that exists on the primary storage

  • Aggressive scrub removes from Swarm:

    • files/stubs that have been deleted from the primary storage.

    • old versions of files, keeping in Swarm only the current version of the file that exists on the primary storage

    • files that have been demigrated (transferred from Swarm back to the primary storage).

The Aggressive strategy maximizes storage efficiency. Keep in mind that deleting demigrated files from Swarm increases available space, but at the cost of preventing you from running quick remigrates (remigration of previously demigrated files that have not been modified; quick remigration occurs without data transfer between the primary storage and Swarm).

Best practice

In order to maximize performance benefits from quick-remigration, schedule migration / quick-remigration policies more frequently than the grace period.
