Best practice

Do not create a source based on the root of a volume.

When you create a new source, you can exclude Exclude a directory or a set of directories from FileFly management when a new source is created:

  1. First, create Create a new source. This example creates drive E:

  2. By default, allAll directories are included by default:

  3. Select which directories to exclude (untick) within the E partition. Any ticked share is included in our source directory and any unticked is not.

In this example, the The root directory 3236_20160223092851_36_dx1.tar is selected but none of its the subdirectories are.

Note

The reason other dirs appears selected here is the top-level directory is selected. Files contained there are managed, while those in lower-level directories are not.

Exclude by rule

Another way to exclude directories is to use regular expressions. FileFly supports several types of regular expressions and a useful set of wildcard matching rules.

Suppose that you want to include certain directories and also exclude temporary internet files from the share, wherever they are located:

  1. First, create Create a negation rule to exclude any folder that is called Temporary Internet Files:

The Negate flag indicates that this is an exclusion rule, so all directories except those named "Temporary Internet Files" are selected. By itself, this This rule excludes all "Temporary Internet Files" directories by itself, including all files and sub-directories within them.

  2. Next, create Create another rule to filter files in the remaining directories.

  3. Now, combine Combine them: Navigate to Rules and select Create Compound Rule.

  4. Select and Add your two rules from the list of available rules:
